#InsideDCDYNAMIC – Sebastian Hummer

My role in DCDYNAMIC is to develop a feasible chemical recycling route for crosslinked polyethylene. To achieve this, we plan to first dehydrogenate the polymer backbone of the plastic to create more reactive double bonds, and then break the polymer chains at these bonds to obtain shorter C-C chains that can be used in a variety of applications. Currently, I am working on developing a suitable catalyst for the dehydrogenation of crosslinked polyethylene.
My interest in chemistry and its applications in materials began at school. Throughout my studies, I devoted more time to investigating organic and materials chemistry, and I fell in love with these specific fields. Starting this PhD has enabled me to combine these two areas of study in one project, allowing me to apply my knowledge and try to make the world a better place by developing a recycling process.
The demand for HVDC cables is increasing due to the shift towards larger floating wind farms located further offshore. These cables are typically made of crosslinked polyethylene, a type of plastic renowned for its exceptional properties. Currently, plastic waste produced during cable production and plastic in old cables are not recycled due to a lack of feasible methods. Therefore, there is a need to find new processes that enable effective recycling. One such process could be our chemical recycling method, which is under development.
Undoubtedly, the biggest challenge was the development of a suitable catalyst for the dehydrogenation of crosslinked polyethylene. Seeing that the synthesised catalyst was fit for purpose was very exciting.
I am definitely improving my lab skills, like getting more in touch with organic catalysis, as well as my social skills, through this multidisciplinary project.
Always coffee!
I will always choose the early mornings in the lab.
Autumn
I really enjoy going on hikes and runs in and around Vienna. I enjoy reading books, and I love baking cakes and biscuits whenever I have the time.
