#InsideDCDYNAMIC – Pit Bechtold
Pit Bechtold, PhD-student
Dept. of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, ETH Zurich
My role in DCDYNAMIC lies in the research on the fundamental understanding of ageing in XLPE. Namely the single, sequential and combined ageing of the three different stresses: thermal, electrical and dynamic mechanical. Based on these results, an approach to model the lifetime of such a cable will be developed.
Living in times where the political will to achieve the green energy transition is fading, I felt it was important to contribute to the technical solutions instead of waiting for them. High-Voltage Engineering is one of the fields where this spirit is very embedded, and that motivates me to work on this topic.
Insuring and being able to finance a project requires a solid picture on the risks and their probabilities to occur. In consequence, developing a lifetime model for this novel type of cables will enable insurers to better understand these risks of failure.
Surely the visit to NKT Karlskrona, being able to see the production and the huge scale of it. This helped putting your own research into perspective and shows its immediate impact.
Pursuing doctoral studies always teaches you about project and resource management, but working in the DCDYNAMIC project gives me the possibility to interact with a broad range of partners. This shows me that being able to communicate my research and results to people coming from different backgrounds is a much-needed skill, which I am eager to further develop.
